What happens if you give a house plant whiskey(40%) instead of water?

I ume it is the ethanol in the whiskey that causes the plant to wilt, rot or die. Am I correct? Would someone further elaborate on the subject and possible site a scientific journal or source that I can read up on? Thanks.
