How can Stephen Hopson work as a stockbroker as he's been deaf since birth?

I am a Chinese,know little about Stephen.I just finished reading his article of dare to take risks in Chicken Soup for Cellege Soul.I am inspired and motivated very much by his experiences of taking daring risks.But I wonder if he is deaf,how can he communicate with people and work as a stockbroker at Merrill Lynch?Thanks.
