Da Vinci Code Question; please read on...?

I'm quite well aware that the book and movie are fiction. I'm interested in the title of one of the tracks from the soundtrack. It's called "Kyrie for the Magdalene," and it's a very lovely piece of music, in my opinion. My question: I know that "kyrie" simply translates as "Oh Lord," But what is a kyrie in general?
